Why Volunteer?
The primary requirement for being a volunteer is a desire and ability to help others. We welcome volunteers of all ages, talents, and interests. You do not need to be a member of the Village (though you can be) or have any specific skill. Some volunteers have unique skills or knowledge to share, while others offer more general assistance with a wide variety of needs. These services are provided by a team of volunteers recruited and organized by Village Amigos of Grant County, NM. These services are available by request on this website once you are a member.
Volunteer services that volunteers provide are organized into Teams. These Teams are:
Going My Way Team (Transportation): Volunteers drive members to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other nearby errands.
Helping Hands Team: Tasks we handle include: Hang pictures or mirrors, Fix or replace a hinge or door knob, Flip bed mattresses, Replace light bulbs (12 ft. max Ht.), Lubricate doors, Replace heater/refrig/water filters, Install shower head, Replace a door screen, Replace toilet seat, Replace toilet tank flapper/float, Adjust toilet tank water level, Replace/repair doorbells, Change alarm, remote batteries, Make a thermostat work, Set up TV, cable, garage remotes, Reset breaker box or GFI…once, Lift heavy boxes, move furniture. The Village does not perform services that are best handled by a professional or that might endanger a volunteer.
Companionship Team: Personal phone calls and home visits help members stay in touch and socialize. Monthly activities provide opportunities to meet new friends and enjoy interactive participation.
Home Technology: Older persons can find using computers and smart phones challenging, but a little help by answering questions can make such a difference. Volunteers will help with setting up voice command devices such as Alexa. They’ll also install smart lights, plugs, doorbells and thermostats.
